Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of private lessons?
Private instruction is the best way for anyone to learn to play an instrument. The focus is on the student's education, growth, and development not only as a musician, but as an individual as well. The Music Loft faculty crafts individual lessons around the learning style of each student in order to guide you in becoming a well rounded, confident musician.
How long will it take me to learn to play?
This is a difficult question to answer - consider this:
1) Like any new skill, students will progress on their instruments according to the amount of time they are able to spend practicing, AND
2) Anyone can make significant progress quickly with the help of an inspiring instructor.
What is the "right" age to start music lessons?
There is no "right" age to begin. However, most children can successfully start lessons between 5 and 6 years old. Piano or violin are good choices for a first instrument.
Can adults learn to play an instrument?
YES! Keep in mind some of the challenges that are unique to adult students. Adults are very used to "exercising" their brains in very specific ways. Since musical skills and techniques require almost all areas of our brains, adults sometimes experience frustration quickly.
Is there any benefit for an adult to learn an instrument?
Absolutely! Keep in mind that adults face unique challenges, however. Adults are used to "using" their brains in very specific ways. Since musical skills and techniques require all parts of the brain, adults will often become frustrated quickly. With some patience and lots of practice, you will be on your way to making music in no time! Learning an instrument can also be a great stress relief and can even help with arthiritis and other minor joint injuries.
Should I buy an instrument online?
If you are absolutely certain you would like to invest in an instrument, we recommend purchasing an instrument from a reputable music dealer that sells student line instruments (not Best Buy, ToysRUs, Sears, etc.). Be very cautious about purchasing an instrument online.
Here's why:
1) Not all instruments are created equal. Ask an expert instrumentalist at The Music Loft what to look for in an instrument. Beware of "great deals" from online retailers. This is especially true for stringed instruments. Often times, these "luthier-quality" instruments are prefabricated overseas, and are made of low quality wood, inexpensive strings, and generally have a terrible sound. This is also true for woodwind and brass instruments. Look for BRAND NAME, music educator APPROVED instruments.
2) Renting is usually a better deal. If you're not sure your child (or you) will enjoy his/her instrument of choice, you probably don't want to make an investment in an instrument right away. Why not rent? The Music Loft has an easy, flexible, and inexpensive month- to- month rent- to- own program. We only offer brand name, music educator approved instruments so you can be confident that you're setting your child up for SUCCESS on the instrument. You can find more details about our rental program here.
